Special Protection group was established in 1988 after assassination of Indira Gandhi. SPG is responsible for the security of the Prime Ministers and their family members. SPG unit comprises more than 3000 well trained members. SPG commandos and officers are drawn from various state police departments, Paramilitary Forces such as BSF, CISF, CRPF and ITBP. They undergo 45 days of world class training similar to the United States Secret Service.

There have been no successful attempts to attack Prime Ministers since inception of Special Protection Group.

The SPG functions as a law enforcement security agency purely on the strength of an Executive Order under the command of SPG Director with Inspector General Rank. Seven Commandos along with commanding officer are responsible for the PM’s security at a time. Usually SPG uses their deep blue and white combat uniform, occasionally black suits. SPG commandos are well trained sharpshooters and are good at long range firing tactics.

Rs 1,800 crore has been spent by the UPA government on the Special Protection Group since 2004The Special Protection Group has now grown to a strong force for protecting members of the Gandhi family, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and ex-prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

The cars in which SPG travels along with VIPs are armed with the state-of-the-art technology. The cars are bullet proof and capable of withstanding high intensity blasts. The specially-customized tyres allow the cars to travel for at least 10 km with punctured tyres. The position of the VIP’s car is always monitored by SPG HQs in Delhi via GPS. Moreover, radar devices in the capital are always monitoring its every movement. If anything goes wrong with the convoy, SPG HQ alerts the local Police and nearest NSG Commando Hub. Special engineers of SPG inspect every nook and corner of the car before giving it their go-ahead. VIP vehicles are equipped with jammers. These sophisticated equipments are handled by SPG Signal Engineers.
